ADULTS SUPPORTING K-12 STUDENT SUCCESS FAQ

FAQs for Effective Parenting For School Readiness and Success:

Q: What will I learn in this class?

A:  You will learn about positive discipline concepts, such as treating children in a way you  yourself would want to be treated,    having mutual respect, giving children ownership of a problem and finding a solution and giving children ownership of problems they have created.

Q:  What is the structure of the class?

A:  At the start of the class, parents "check-in" where they talk about successes or difficulties of the  week and can invite feedback from class members and the teacher.  Each class session has a topic of the evening and there are handouts for members to take and discuss at this time.  Class presentation/discussion is followed by a short video related to the evening's topic.

Q:  Is this class for parents and caregivers of younger or older children?

A:  Parents of toddlers through elementary school will learn about family rules and routines that contribute to school readiness and success.  These basic principles apply to all families, so parents who cannot come to the class dealing with preteens and teens will benefit as well.

Q:    How old does my child have to be for me to benefit from taking this class?

A:  Children can begin puberty in the upper elementary grades and this may lead to physical and emotional changes typical of the "tween" years.  Parents of children 9 years old and up who are experiencing these changes are best served by taking this parenting class.  Parents wanting to get a glimpse of the future are also welcome!
