Position Description

Part-time Instructors for English as a Second Language (ESL)

Onsite & Offsite Programs

Pay Range: $40.20-$44.22 (credentialed)

Definition:

Under the direction of the English as a Second Language Supervisor & ESL Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator, the instructor will plan, carry out, evaluate and supervise instructional activities for groups of students in the ESL program. Deliver curriculum that enables listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English to help prepare adult students for success at work, in an academic setting, and greater participation in the community.

Duties may include:

  • Create a welcoming and nurturing environment appropriate for adult students
  • Establish good rapport with NVAE teachers, students and support staff
  • Prepare Lesson Plans and adhere to assigned curriculum, adapting as needed, and employing a variety of appropriate instructional methods including differentiated instruction, and collaborative group activities to build community
  • Follow appropriate instructional practices and classroom procedures
  • Work with program team to develop and upgrade these practices-- through individual, department and school-wide trainings/meetings and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)
  • Support CASAS and English Language Civics Testing
  • Maintain student records and submit necessary paperwork (at least weekly)

Education and Experience:

Adult Education Credential with an ESL designation

OR

K-12 Credential  

  • Multiple Subject Credential

OR

  • Designated Subject (Single Subject) Credential with authorization to teach ESL and 12 hours of upper division credits in English, Languages or Communications.

Term:

Part-Time, August 27, 2018 - May 24, 2019

Teaching Positions and Locations:

  • Beginning High ESL
    • Napa Valley Adult Ed. main campus, Monday/Tuesday from 9:00 am to 11:30 am.
  • Grammar for Intermediate & Advanced level students
    • Napa Valley Adult Ed. main campus, Monday from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm.
  • Advanced Transitions
    • Napa Valley Adult Ed. main campus, Wednesday/Thursday from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm.
  • Multilevel ESL
    • Napa Valley Language Academy, Tuesday/Wednesday from 8:30 am to 11:00 am.
    • Canyon Oaks, Tuesdays/Thursdays from 8:30 am to 10:30 am.
    • Napa Library, Wednesdays from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm.
    • Napa Junction, American Canyon, Tuesdays/Thursdays from 8:30 pm to 11:00 am.

Definition:

Under the direction of the English as a Second Language Supervisor & ESL Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator, the instructor will plan, carry out, evaluate and supervise instructional activities for groups of students in the ESL program. Deliver curriculum that enables listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. Help prepare advanced level ESL student to research, identify and utilize the resources and services necessary to transition to, and succeed in career training and jobs. Work collaboratively in a co-teaching model with Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers  to help students learn about computers and business, the healthcare field and the hospitality industry.

Duties may include:

  • Create a welcoming and nurturing environment appropriate for adult students
  • Establish good rapport with NVAE teachers, students and support staff
  • Prepare Lesson Plans and adhere to assigned curriculum, adapting as needed, and employing a variety of appropriate instructional methods including differentiated instruction, and collaborative group activities to build community
  • Apply computer skills necessary to guide students through some web based activities  
  • Guide tutor support
  • Follow appropriate instructional practices and classroom procedures
  • Work with program team to develop and upgrade these practices-- through individual, department and school-wide trainings/meetings and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)
  • Administer Civics Objective Additional Assessments and support CASAS Testing
  • Maintain student records and submit necessary paperwork weekly

Education and Experience:

Adult Education Credential with an ESL designation

OR

K-12 Credential  

  • Multiple Subject Credential

OR

  • Designated Subject (Single Subject) Credential with authorization to teach ESL and 12 hours of upper division credits in English, Languages or Communications.

Class Details:

Fridays from 8:30 am to 11:00 am on our main campus

Term:

Part-Time, Fall Semester: September 7, 2018 - December 14, 2018. Possibility of continuation in the spring semester.

Intermediate Reading & Writing Challenge

Pay Range: $40.20-$44.22 (credentialed)

Definition:

Under the direction of the English as a Second Language Supervisor & ESL Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator, the instructor will carry out, evaluate and supervise instructional activities for groups of Intermediate level ESL students in the ESL program. Deliver curriculum that emphasizes reading, writing, and grammar skills in English. Help prepare Intermediate level ESL students to transition and advance to academic and career pathway opportunities.

Duties may include:

  • Create a welcoming and nurturing environment appropriate for adult students
  • Establish good rapport with NVAE teachers, students and support staff
  • Adhere to assigned curriculum, adapting as needed, and employing a variety of appropriate instructional methods including differentiated instruction, partner, and collaborative group activities to build community
  • Meet minimally twice weekly with students one-on-one for writing support
  • Maintain student portfolios to track writing progress
  • Apply computer skills necessary to guide students through web based keyboard practice activities 
  • Follow appropriate instructional practices and classroom procedures
  • Work with program team to develop and upgrade these practices-- through individual, department and school-wide trainings/meetings and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)
  • Administer Civics Objective Additional Assessments and support CASAS Testing
  • Maintain student records and submit necessary paperwork weekly
